HISTORY
OF THE USO
On February 4, 1941, the United Services Organization was formed. Six civilian
agencies that provided wartime support to the military came together in
the spirit of brotherhood to give aid in the forming of a new agency, the
USO. |

Those
six agencies were The Jewish Welfare Board, National Catholic Community
Services, the Salvation Army, Traveler's Aid, the YMCA and the YWCA.
The USO became the only non-profit civilian agency chartered by Congress.

Greater Houston USO was chartered by World USO in 1962. The primary service
locally is through the Airport Centers at Intercontinental and Hobby. Each
center is staffed by volunteers during normal operating hours.
The Greater Houston USO also provides for distressed lodging, telephone
